Wasmi 2.0: The Fastest Wasm Interpreter Gets 2.2x Faster

Engineering of the fastest WebAssembly interpreters

After eight months of work, Wasmi 2.0 is out, running 2.2x faster than its predecessor on average across benchmarks. The release introduces new instruction dispatch modes, including direct-threaded code for maximum speed, and accumulator registers that reduce memory traffic. Benchmarks against other top interpreters like Wasm3, WAMR, and Wasmtime Pulley show Wasmi 2.0 now leads the pack in execution performance while keeping startup times competitive.

It is fair to say that Wasmi 2.0 clearly belongs to the category of the fastest portable Wasm interpreters.

    Very cool!

How does the performance of this wasm interpreter compare to native execution? Are we getting close?

And you’re comparing against wasmtime.pulley, which is their optimising interpreter. How does it stack up against wasmtime’s cranelift compiler?
