1Password Responds to Customer Outrage Over Omacom Foundation Patronage

1Password Replied to My Disappointment

After publicly voicing disappointment with 1Password's decision to become a corporate patron of the Omacom Foundation, Nicola Losito received a reply from the company's support team. The response defends the contribution as support for open-source infrastructure, clarifies that it is not an endorsement of any individual's views, and asserts that the patronage has no influence on product decisions. Losito remains skeptical, questioning whether recent price hikes are funding such controversial choices, and calls for customers to take a stand.

We must be willing to sacrifice ease and convenience, and we must be willing to sever all connections with these entities.

This seems like a very reasonable and thoughtful response. You have plenty of password manager options if it bothers you.

The linked toot (?) (https://social.lol/@mcn/117204227884873406) puts things in a understandable way:

    > Most importantly my entire family uses it. You know how difficult it was to get them to use a password manager consistently. [...] I asked my parents whether they knew of linux or dhh and they do not. Most people dont. They will ask: why move if its working and no issue with the software itself. [...] Say I find a new one, am I suppose to research what their corporate policy is and who they support. Sorry, I have a life to live.

It's just such an uphill battle to get anyone you care about to use a password manager, getting them to switch it out unless it stops working would probably be ever harder.

Hacker news has to be some of the worst community when it comes to apologising on behalf of people who have said the shittiest things. If these people said what they said about you, your family or your race, you would have a problem, but he didn't so you don't. Sad.

    thanks. i had no idea.

apparently bitwarden can import data vaults super easily from 1passwd.

guess i’ll be recommending clients to bitwarden from here.

Ethics are easy to hold until they cost you something : the real test of principle is whether you’re willing to endure the hassle of moving all your passwords to another service. So what are other good options to move ? Keep in mind 1Password is amazing :)

For the curious. This is the thing everyone is mad about. [0]

I'll leave it you to decide if advocating that your country deport the homeless people who are publicly defecating in the bushes makes you into actual Hitler (as he's been compared to even in this post).

Another snowflake coloured by Calufornia politics and not enough nuance on technical matters. You have other password managers.

    > Our contribution is made to the Omacom Foundation, not to an individual

    However, from DHH:

    > Before this can be an amazing system for everyone, it first has to be an amazing system for me, personally.

By DHH's own words, all money currently is 100% spent on DHH's desires. That is a contribution to an individual.
