Cartopolis - Interactive globe-sized 3D world built from open data
Show HN: Cartopolis, interactive globe-sized 3D world
Cartopolis is a walkable 3D copy of the real world, built from open public data and shared between everyone. Explore buildings with detailed cards showing year built, use, and floor area, all rendered in your browser, desktop, or Android. Chat with others via local proximity voice or text, point at locations, and even script objects. It works anywhere on Earth, with rich register detail in the Netherlands and OpenStreetMap elsewhere. Free, open source, and self-hostable, Cartopolis is perfect for residents, planners, and municipalities.
A social map of the real world: see how a place is built, and talk about it with the people who are there.

I like the idea but it seems unusable for me at least at the moment. It crashes whenever I zoom.
I'm curious as what is different between this and say, google maps?

WebGPU version feels incredibly slow for a Bevy project, crashes constantly, even for the most simplest looking scenes. I'm running it on my high-end desktop

Loved it! But I think with advent of llm, there should be a way to somehow feed the current view and generate a realistic 3D view, based on the real data from the same location to be as accurate as possible.
