Bez: Generating a browser engine from specs and tests
Bez is a project that generates a web rendering engine from specifications, using the three major browsers and WPT as tests. The goal is to make building a browser engine cheap enough that many can exist, not just a few. Early results show generated CSS layout rules pass all 227 test cases, and three-browser voting can identify real compatibility bugs like Firefox's 1/60px rounding.
Building a web engine by hand costs hundreds of engineers and many years, so only a few companies can have one, and only they decide how the web works.
