Man Dressed as Darth Vader Defends Flock Cameras to San Diego City Council

Man in Darth Vader costume tells San Diego City Council: 'This is what the emperor needs'

A man dressed as Darth Vader appeared before the San Diego City Council's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee to defend the city's use of Flock surveillance cameras. Speaking with the character's signature breathing, he urged the council to deploy the cameras to track 'rebel scum' and find Luke Skywalker, while also criticizing the council's 'Jedi mind tricks' and the surveillance technology's impact on trust. San Diego has over 550 Flock cameras, and the city recently signed a yearlong deal with the company, despite growing criticism from activists and the ACLU over privacy concerns.

This is what the emperor needs. This technology will help us find the rebel scum and the hidden base on Hoth.

Usually, it's Darth Vaders dressed as men that defend Flocksafty cameras.

A reminder that city council public comment meetings can be more like Parks and Rec than anyone imagines.

That said, showing up and making comments at local meetings can really matter. The number of people who actually participate in meetings like this is low. Showing up with a reasonable argument (probably not in a Darth Vader outfit) can have an outsized impact.

This was both hilarious and apropos.
